When the Forest Calls Us Home

Look on this page for the story of us reconnecting with the sounds of the forest that was once our home and the singing of the gibbons that will tell us to listen to their melody again.

BUKIT LAWANG ORANGUTAN TRIP STORY

The Jungle Calls: A New Beginning

The rainforest has a voice — a quiet call carried through the rustling leaves, the rushing rivers, and the distant cry of hornbills. At Hutan Sumatra, we have always listened to that call. After years away, the forest has drawn us back, reminding us that our true home is here, deep within its ancient embrace. And so, we return with new spirit and old soul, ready to guide every traveler who seeks the heart of the jungle.

Every Gunung Leuser orangutan trek is more than just an adventure; it is a journey into one of the last great rainforests on Earth. The trails of Bukit Lawang have carried countless explorers, and yet each step feels new. You will walk beneath towering trees that have stood for centuries, hear the symphony of gibbons at dawn, and perhaps lock eyes with a wild orangutan — a moment that can change how you see the world. These encounters, woven into the rhythm of the jungle, make every Gunung Leuser orangutan trek an unforgettable experience.

But our treks are not only about wildlife. They are about connection — with nature, with the people who call this forest home, and with yourself. Our mission is to ensure that every Gunung Leuser orangutan trek is authentic, responsible, and deeply respectful. Ten percent of what we earn goes directly to supporting local communities, helping them find new opportunities while preserving their traditions. In this way, your journey becomes part of something larger: sustaining both the rainforest and the lives intertwined with it.

Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is more than a destination — it is a living legacy. By joining a Gunung Leuser orangutan trek, you step into that legacy, becoming part of the ongoing story of conservation, courage, and care. The forest has survived centuries of change, and it waits patiently for those who wish to walk its paths with open eyes and an open heart.

With Hutan Sumatra, your footsteps echo with purpose. Each Gunung Leuser orangutan trek carries the wisdom of the past and the hope of the future. This is more than tourism — it is a calling. A bridge between travelers and the wild, between adventure and responsibility, between the past we honor and the future we strive to protect.

Welcome back to the jungle. Welcome to the soul of Sumatra.

The location is a bit inside and if you go by car, park a bit in front and walk if you go by motorbike, you can park directly in front of the location, the car parking fee is 30 thousand for overnight stay, don't give it if you ask for 50 thousand, the staff are friendly and very helpful plus the rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are clean, the location is right on the river bank

We stayed here on a weekday during the low season (Feb 2026). The place is clean, the location is excellent and the service is very good. Our room (#4) had a shared balcony and view of the river. A couple things to consider:
- no hot water. We knew this in advance and it was not an issue since Bukit Lawang is warm enough.
- the monkeys will come to the balcony and raid the garbage bins. Keep all foods in your room and your room door closed at all times. Maybe the guest house should not even have garbage bins out on the balcony. The monkeys will also walk around on the roof so ask for rooms on lower levels if you’re a light sleeper. It was not an issue for us since we were already up by 7am.
- food at the restaurant was reasonably priced. The taste was average.
- we did not do any trekking but the male receptionist was still very helpful and friendly. Overall a very pleasant stay.

We had an amazing stay at Fido Dido Guest House. Great location with a beautiful view. Also very helpful and kind staff. The food for breakfast and dinner was one of the best we had in the whole of our Indonesia trip! The room was fine. Make sure you take earplugs with you if you can’t handle river noise. We didn’t have any problems with it though.
Thank you so much! Definitely recommend.
